Is bungeeing a bike to the roof off your car safe?
So in two days my family is going down to a lake in eastern washigton state and it involves going through a smallish mountain range and possible rain. We dont have a hitch mounted bike rack or any other but we will buy one eventually. So my only options left for stowing my decently nice brand new road bike are inside the car but room is scarce or on the roof of the car? Im not sure if thats safe or not. We have a chevy trailblazer with rails on the top so its possible to bungie the bike down. Im just not sure if its safe for the bike to not take any damage or even fall off. Pleaseeee help!
When I was a kid we used to do that all the time - I don't think I'd even seen a bike rack. We'd unscrew one pedal so it didn't dent the roof and use way too much rope, and tie 2 bikes flat on a clip-on roof rack and drive for about 5 hours. Should still work. Rope should be better than bungees - you can just tie down 3 or 4 points. Bungees are better for things like surfboards that will slide out of rope if it gets loose.
