I need to connect a computer sound card to a telephone handset, what kind of impedance match do I need?
I need to output audio from the computer into the 'mic in' of a telephone handset. I have a circuit wired to intercept the mic lines of the telephone. The two speaker wires pass through my circuit to directly connect the handset with the telephone base. The two mic wires are intercepted in my circuit. Right now on the computer sound card output side I have a 32 ohm R to ground, a 1k ohm in series, a 100 ohm R to ground, a 47 uF cap in series to the handset side where the mic input is connected. This is a digital telephone. Measuring the voltage on the mic when the handset is connected directly to the phone gives ~6.5 volts. I assume this is a powered mic.
So far all I get is crackling, help! I think the 32 ohm to ground resistor is probably too small for my sound card.
part of the problem is a telephone is not ground referenced. placing any part of the phone frame at or near ground potential will cause a serious degradation of service. At the very minimum, use a transformer connection to isolate the computer out from the phone mic in. Then use a capacitor to isolate the transformer from the headset DC voltage.
When you say "speaker out" from the computer, i am confused. you are saying the sound card in your computer delevops enough wattage to power speakers directly? this is extremely unusal. General the out from the soundcard is supposed to go to external amplifier or amplified speakers. The output load at this point should be more than 10k ohm.
If that is the case, then the interface will require a lot more design considerations.
