How can I prevent DHCP servers from being added to my network?
I have recently became the network admin for a public high school. The school has approximately 20 buildings, connected via multi-mode fiber optics. There are approximately 300 computers using the school's LAN at any given time. The network has been brought down occasionally by a careless staff member plugging their linksys wireless router they brought from home in in the wrong spot. What happens is its DHCP is responding to some of the requests of other staff members' computers. What is the best way to prevent or minimize this problem?
This is a tough one. I've read that you can use ACLs that you can specify which addresses are able to send DHCP replies, and the rest are filtered.
I've also read (if the IOS supports it) you can use the dhcp snooping. DHCP snooping works by separating trusted from untrusted interfaces on a switch. Trusted interfaces are allowed to respond to DHCP requests; untrusted interfaces are not.
