PC user looking for assistance on buying "Apple" system for music purposes.?
My 2 son's are both into music (guitar/drums). They also stay after school to create electronic music - and record live instruments to create tracks. We use PC's at home - but what I would like to get them is an Apple system and Logic(sp?) software so they also explore this at home. It's fun for them but serious enough that it's not a toy/game thing (I think they are beyond GarageBand software).
Could someone help outline an Apple based system shopping list for me to search around in regard to this? Apple System Name - RAM amount needed - audio card - midi keyboard /controller.... (not not necessarily Apple brand) - I think I have them buy the software through school at a discounted student price. Other than that I'm not looking to spend a millon bucks... Thanks.

If you are able to assemble a custom computer, or know someone else who can, I'd recommend building a custom windows XP or 2000 machine (not Vista) with an AMD X2 processor, at least 1 (2 is better) GB of RAM, an Nvidea Geforce 7000 series, or 8000 if you are willing to pay for it, and all the other various parts you need.
Buy parts locally if you can, but go to tigerdirect.com if you can't. Local parts are usually more expensive, but if you have a good locally owned computer business nearby, the advice you can get on what parts to select is well worth it.
I'm honestly somewhat split on Apple's products. Their operating system is decent, but their hardware is very overpriced. If you can, I think you should make a custom-built windows machine and run something other than Logic.
However, if you're not a computer person, you should get a pre-built computer, and apple's machines are the best (if most overpriced) computers on the market.
If you do want to get a mac, you should probably get one of the desktop machines (MacMini, iMac, or Mac Pro), and though it is quite expensive, I recommend the Mac Pro, because it is the only machine Apple makes that is actually significantly upgradeable. (The others are held together by glue.) If you don't want to spend that much, one of the other two is good. All Apple machines come with a decent processor and video card, so that's not much of an issue. I'd recommend 1 GB of RAM at the minimum, though 2 GB would probably be better for what you want to do. Since music will eat up your hard drive space very quickly, get a big hard drive.
As for a non-apple mac system, I've never heard of one, but if you can find one, I highly recommend you consider it, as apple's hardware is insanely overpriced.
