Best way to hook up to a wifi hotspot?
I live about 1300 yds from a wifi hotspot and am looking for advice on the best set up to tap into it. I have a 20ft high antenna mast in my back yard that I can mount to, I do not have clear line of sight. I'd say half of the distance has large trees and even an highway over pass going through it.
I'm looking into an Alpha 2watt USB adapter to use but am stuck on what type of antenna to use. I've looked at a couple 16dbi yagi's and a couple 15dbi omni's, even saw a 'cantenna' on ebay that says it's rated at 30dbi. In all though I'm lost on what I would need and don't want to just go buy things to find out I can't touch the hotspot anyway.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Just to add - I have cable internet. I'm looking for a way to get rid of it and save some money.
You need to subscribe for the service. You need to know the SSID of the hotspot. And many more things. Apart from all this the range of 1300 yards is a limitation. The wifi signal will be attenuated to such a low strength, it will not be usable.
