Gigabit Home Network?
i want to upgrade my home network to gigabit speeds. all my ethernet cables are cat 5e but my switches and router are only 10/100. can i just upgrade my switches to gigabit and keep my router or do i need to upgrade the router as well in order to achieve gigabit speeds. Thanks
Some Gigabit switches will only run all your devices at 100Mb if any 'one' device attached to it is 100Mb. So, get a good Gigabit switch if you are going to mix speeds. Also, CAT-6 cable is needed to reach full potential of gigabit speeds. CAT-5e will still work well though.
As long as you get a good switch (like Cisco or Netgear) you will not need to replace the router.
