how is this a brain teaser? free radicals are single electrons that want a partner to fill their orbitals and gain an octet, however, most electrons in your body are already found in pairs, thus its difficult to find another single radical to pair up with. as a result, that single electron steals an electron from some other compound and that compound becomes a radical. that compound steals yet another single from a pair and a new radical is formed. in this way, the radical is constantly moving and destroying molecules necessary to live.
lets say you were at an all couples dance, but then one guy shows up without a partner. no one at this dance cares who they dance with as long as they are dancing with someone. so this guy steals a partner. that newly partnerless guy goes and steals a different partner. pretty soon the dance floor that was stable and healthy is now completely jumbled and screwy.
