I use a Windows XP Home Edition OS, and am having trouble installing a LINKSYS USB LAN Adapter. What is wrong?
Naturally, this OS doesn't recognize the hardware, triggering the 'New Hardware Found' window. Unfortunately, it did not come with a disk - if it has one, I do not know of it- and when I attempt to 'Install the hardware automatically (Recommended)', it doesn't find it, and a window comes up prompting me to search the internet for the hardware to install.
...I can't get to the internet, which is why I have the adapter. It is the kind that plugs into a USB drive, and opens up in the back to where the Ethernet cord, when plugged in, is sticking out at a slant. How would I connect to the internet this way?
P.S. I can't connect to the internet via the Ethernet port because the port has actually taken damage.
PPS. This isn't on a laptop, and I do not possess a flash drive.

Figure out the Linksys model number and go to linksys's support website: http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/linksys (Cisco bought out linksys)
On a computer connected to the internet, download the XP driver for that device and put it on a flash drive. Copy the driver to your damaged laptop and you'll be able to install the USB network device.

USB thumb drives are also known as flash drives, and are readily available to pretty much anyone.
I didn't realize it was a desktop (my bad) so have you considered just buying an expansion network card for it?
