I was wondering if it is possible to plug my USB epson printer into one of the LAN ports on my router? Obviously an adapter would be needed (do these even exist?) and would I be able to 'plug and play' straight away, using the printer from both wireless laptop and wired desktop PC?

You can get wired and wireless print servers which aren't that expensive and will easily connect to your router. Let us know how much you're willing to spend and your location and I can have a look for you if you want. And easier way to share your printer across the network would be to:
Make sure that both computers are part of the same workgroup... this is simple. Right click my computer, click properties and go to the computer name tab and change name. There should be an input box for workgroup, it doesn't matter what you put in here as long as it's the same on each computer on the network.
Then plug your printer into one of the computers and in the printers and faxes control panel page on that computer right click on the printer and click properties. Go to the sharing tab and select "Share this printer".
The on the other computer open "My network places" and in the bar on the left of that window click on "View workgroup computers" you should then see the other computer (that has the printer attached), double click it, it may ask you for a passoword, just put in an administrator username and password that you use on it and from there you should be able to add that printer to the other computer.
