I have a wireless N capable laptop and a network hard drive connected directly to the network. I am curently using only a G capable router. Would upgrading to a wireless N router speed up my transfer speeds enough that I would notice?
possibly yes.
Remember that most wireless networks will default to the slowest device connected. If you have anything else, like a wi-fi phone, xbox / ps2, or anything else, they may slow your wireless down.
If you take the time to configure your 802.11n network correctly, you may see speeds as high as 10X "normal g" or 5X 'g-extreme'/ 'g+'. Right now, your bandwidth bottleneck is probably the wireless.
If you have a SATA drive, USB connection, wired ethernet.. they all are about the same orders of speed.
802.11n is pretty close, too.
Now, if you only have a single-phase N router (also known as ' a cheap one') - don't bother. If you have something slower in your systems... like an older USB 1 or 1.1 "high-speed" connection to your hard disk.. or if the hard disk is not SATA speed.. ( IDE 100 or 133), then you won't see any improvements. If your wireless card is 'pre-n capable' then it may not really be able to get the full benefit of an upgrade to 802.11N anyhow. It needs to be dual-channel capable to realize all the benefits.
For now - before you spend your money on something new, check out articles on how to tweak your network settings to maximize speed. Improving your antenna placement, changing fragmentation size/ min-max packet sizes, examining the throughput on your storage drive - possibly changing filesystems or defragging files - check for firmware updates on all the parts - and software driver updates. All of these things may help you get more from what you have .. and later, if you still want to upgrade, then you will know how to maximize your throughput using the added bands on an 802.11 N device.
