Ethernet Cable Colors?
What is the difference in the colors available in Ethernet cables? Blue, yellow, white, gray, orange, green, red & black? How is a "Cat" or "patch" cable different? Which type should I use for a small home-network having two computers aprox 40 feet apart and with a basic cable-internet connection? Thanks.
1)The external color of an ethernet cable usually doesn't mean anything. As long as its a 'standard ethernet' cable, they all work the same.
2)A standard ethernet cable is wired to work correctly when a computer is plugged into a network connection(router/hub/switch). A short ethernet cable is referred to as a patch cable when its used to connect 2 devices that are very close together. Cat refers to the category of cable it is. Most modern ethernet cables are referred to as Cat 5, because they have the correct electrical abilities to carry network signals as per the specification. There are also Cat 6 cables available, which would work too.
3)There is a kind of ethernet cable called a 'crossover' cable. This is used to connect computer to computer WITHOUT using a router/hub/switch. This is not normally done much anymore.
4)Normally, you can only plug one computer at a time into a cable modem. To enable both computers to use the internet, you would need to buy a router. Email me if you need more details.
