Replacing Old Wall Timer with New Timer. How do I fix wire mismatch?
I am replacing an old wall timer with a GE Smart Digital Timer. The old timer had two black wires connected to two black wires from the wall. The new timer however has red, black, white and green wires. I know the green is the ground, but how do I connect red, white and black to just two black wires?
I tried connecting black wire to the black hot wire, and I have connected the red and white to the other black wire in the wall. Every time I turn the light on, it flashes rapidly.
How do I fix the neutral wire?
Well, you're in it now! The smart timer apparently needs its own 120 volt power to operate. The neutral wire is for the timer circutry to operate. If you can't run a neutral wire into the box then your stuck.
White is neutral for the timer circuit.
Black provides the hot power to the timer as well as hot power supply for the switched device.
Red is the output off the "switch" to the device you are operating.
Green of course is the ground.
Never use the ground wire as a neutral!
