Can I load VPN client on XP Home Edition?
Trying to load my vpn for work but I get an plug and play access error trying to load the cisco network adapter. Can I get this access or do I have to buy XP professional? thanks
when trying to load the Cisco Network adapter, I get plugandplayaccess: denied. I am trying to load Cisco VPN Client 4.8.00.0440-k9 which I think is the most recent. I am on Windows XP Home Edition. Any idea why the access error and how to get around it?
Yes, you should be able to install the Cisco VPN client with no issues... It is supported on Win98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP (home or pro) and other platforms. Below is a link to the data sheet and the FAQ. Have you downloaded and installed the latest (v4.8.X) version? Download latest from here: http://www.cisco.com/kobayashi/sw-center/sw-vpn.shtml
[Reply to additional details]: Hmmm, haven't seen this before. But a couple suggestions... make sure any/all antivirus software and personal firewalls are completely turned off when installing the VPN client software. Also, download and install locally, don't install from a network shared drive or from the web site, but save to hard drive and install from your desktop. Is there anything already in your registry from the previous attempts? Or if you go to add/remove programs does it show up? If so, first uninstall it. Also, you might need to use regedit to remove some registry keys such as hkey_local_machine, Software, Cisco Systems, VPN Client. Also the Deterministic Network Enhancer (if it is there). Then reboot, disable any antivirus, firewall, and security programs, then reinstall the VPN client, and reboot normally. I'm wondering if you might also need to play with the order of the adapter and provider bindings, Start, Run, and run "ncpa.cpl" and under the advanced menu select Advanced Settings and on the Adapters and Bindings tab you might need to move the order of plug and play versus any non plug and play adapters, as well as the "Provider order" settings on the other tab.
