what is the purpose of a patch panel?
I am in the process of wiring my home for ethernet, or rather in the planning stages, and am looking over what i need, i bought 1000ft of cat5e cable, some wall plates cat5e keystones, and am trying to find out what else i need i am told i need a Network switch i am thinking of using this one, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122004, seems pretty good, and well i really want to know if i need a patch panel? what do they do? do i really need one? what purpose do they serve? Am i mising anything else?
the purpose of a patch panel is to have a central distribution point from a convienent point to pull your leads to/from. a punch down is used for tv cables and telephone lines typically. you will need to use a switch for data as you only have one source of active comm. a more common process now is going wireless, as most devices (printers, tv's, etc...) have the ability to recieve input this way. good luck.
