Manually adjust CPU fan speed?
Hi Gang-
The hardware monitoring system on my mobo has failed- in BIOS, all stats are "0", and programs like HWINFO32 and Fanspeed can't read my cpu's temp. The circuit is shot.
As a result, my cpu fan is permanently stuck on high, and it's REALLY loud. Is there a way to rewire the 4 power supply wires to the fan (snip one, for example) that would make it run at a somewhat lower speed, like maybe at 50% of it's current speed? Of course, it would still have to run fast enough to do the job, but I'd just like to quiet it down somewhat.
Is there any sort of potentiometer (knob) that I could wire between the power supply and the fan, so that I could crank it up for gaming and turn it down for surfing?
Thanks any and all!
if its a 4 wire fan it'll be 12v, so you can put a resistor in the red wire to reduce speed. youll need to check the amp rating of the fan, and work out an appropriate resistor value to use with Resistance=Voltage/Amperage to slow the fan. a potentiometer would be ideal to allow you to vary depending on temperature.
