what temputer should a 5,400rpm HDD stay at?
I have heard that when hard drive get too hot it can loss it's dates by head crash.

Yes it is true however, most newer (5yrs or newer) have temperature sensors inside the laptop that will shut down the system if the limits are reached.
I have an older Dell and if the room temperature is above 80 degrees, I get about 15 minutes run time before it shuts down.
I probably need to clean the fan... Most laptops today use a 2 1/2" form factor HDD, the operating temperature is relatively low (warm but not scalding hot). There are older HDD's I have experience with that would burn your skin 3-layers deep from a quick touch! Thank God those still aren't around.
Best thing for any HDD is backing up the data, if you do experience a "head crash" it is considered catastrophic and there is no way the data can be recovered. I bought an external USB drive and plug it in once a week or so before I go to bed and copy all my data from the laptop to the USB drive. It works for me and is easier than a tappe drive.
