Upgrade from a AMD athlon 64 x2 4000+ 2.1 Ghz?
Ive had my OEM Acer for over two years now and in the mean time ive upgraded my graphics card (and powersupply) but now i think its time i upgrade my lowly AMD 64x2 2.1 Ghz to something faster. My problem is i dont know whether to get a quad amd ~2.5 Ghz or just get a faster athlon 64x2 (say 3.0GHz) . The main strain on the cpu will be gaming. which one would give the biggest improvement? Also is it possible to replace my motherboard to a intel supported board but still keep my present OS because ive heard their CPUs are much better. Thanks in advance.

Using the AM2 socket you will be able to upgrade to a tri or quad core phenom processor which will be more than enough for your gaming needs. The only area that AMD processors lag behind intel chips is in video encoding which is only really going to be a problem if you are going to be making dodgy DVD's! In my opinion you would be just as well off keeping your current motherboard & slotting in a new AMD processor as it would be the simplest (and cheapest) option.
