i will be connecting the ethernet switch to the internet and i will be connecting a roku netflix instant streaming box and a sony internet connected blu ray player to it.
i have a router with 4 ethernet ports, but the reason for doing all this is to connect my blu ray player to the internet for netflix use, so i figured i would just stick a switch up in the addict and do the whole home dvr service to kill two birds with one stone.
Unless your internet provider serves multiple IP addresses on your internet connection (most only give you one IP address) , only one of the devices connected to the ethernet switch will be able to connect to the internet at any one time. To allow two or more devices to connect to the internet, you will need to put a router between the switch and your internet connection. Are you sure your switch isn't a combination router & switch? Most home routers have a multi-port switch built in to them.
The DIRECTV boxes don't need internet connectivity to do "whole home", but connecting them to the internet does give you some other features like on-demand programs. If all you want is whole home functionality, you just need to network the four DIRECTV boxes together through an ethernet switch and skip connecting them to the internet.
That should work. Just run a cable from one of the output ports on the router to the ethernet switch, and then plug all of your DIRECTV boxes, blu-ray player, etc into the ethernet switch.
