what are those worthless small white PCI slots for anyway on a motherboard?
I was windering what those short small white PCI slots on motherboards are for? i mean there never used for anything there worthless and use up space for other slots that actually are used!
You obviously haven't been around the technical stuff for long. Not all manufacturers colour code everything the same way, sorry.
They are called 'legacy connections' - the way things were done years ago. If your MB uses PCI-Express for video, and/or has built-in video, sound, serial, parallel and other ports, including Hard Drives (both IDE & SATA), then you have no need to worry about them.
However MBs are designed and manufactured to cover the widest possible market, as that maximizes sales, and makes the MB cheaper.
Also, should one of the 'built-ins' fail, you can usually plug in an PCI card in one of those slots to replace that function. A friend recently accidentally shorted out the sound 'built-in' on her MB, so we just plugged in a replacement sound card, rather than replacing the whole PC.
Should you sell your whole PC, or have your MB 'upgraded' i.e. replaced in the same case, then someone else may be able to make good use of those slots, thus making your MB more valuable when you want to sell it!
